T. ionantha v. scaposa grows as an epiphyte in Guatemala at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000 meters. T. ionantha v. scaposa is the largest between the different Tillandsias ionantha. The inflorescence stands out from the leaves and becomes carmine-red when blooming while the leaves remain the same gray-green. T. ionantha v. scaposa needs to be watered more frequently than T. ionantha v. ionantha.
Etymology
From the Greek, Scapus means “shaft”, “stem”, “trunk”.
