Tillandsia ionantha v. ionantha is particularly adaptable to severe dry conditions. It grows primarily epiphytically but is also found as a terrestrial. Guatemalan T. ionantha reaches a height and width of 8 to 12 cm. Tillandsia ionantha is a stemless plant with slightly succulent leaves that form a dense rosette. The purple flowers grow as tall as the leaves making of T. ionantha a durable and practical bouquet to take care of, even to transport. The color of its leaves will change swiftly depending on the intensity of the sunlight it receives. When exposed to strong sunlight, the entire plants color changes to a deep red-purple.
Etymology
From the Greek Ionantus: combination of the adjective ion, “violet”, and the noun anthos, “flower”.
